The Large Munsterlander originated from the Westphalia region of Germany, starting in the early 1900s. What started as a black and white version of the German Longhaired Pointer ended up in a breed in its own right, with plenty of unique characteristics to match.
A breed standard is the guideline which describes the ideal characteristics, temperament and appearance outlined by The Kennel Club. This is what makes each breed unique.
The Large Munsterlander is a multi-purpose gundog, ideal for the rough shooter. Excellent nose, staying power, and works equally well on land and in water. A keen worker, easily taught.
Generally speaking, Large Munsterlanders have a good bill of health. You should always make sure that potential parents are tested under the BVA scheme for eyes and scored under the same scheme for hips and elbows. Large Munsterlanders should also be tested for HUU.
Large Munsterlanders require a good amount of exercise - around 1-2 hours plus a day. This is a working gundog breed and it has to have plenty of stimulation.
The breed is a shedder! If you don't like hair on your carpet, this isn't the breed for you. They don't require excessive grooming, but have long hair and feathering which required brushing.
On average, Large Munsterlanders live to be a good age, often between the ages of 10 to 13.
